    LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN PARKWAY

    Lookout Mountain Parkway

A Scenic Journey Through History and Nature

Winding along the rugged ridge of Lookout Mountain, this 93-mile scenic byway straddles Georgia, Tennessee, and Alabama, blending Civil War history, panoramic vistas, and underground wonders. From cascading waterfalls to ancient rock formations, here’s your guide to this Southern gem:

Begin in Chattanooga, a vibrant city nestled along the Tennessee River. Fuel up and grab a coffee downtown before heading southwest onto Lookout Mountain Parkway (TN-148/GA-189).

    Key Stops & Highlights

    1. Lookout Mountain Incline Railway. Ride the “World’s Steepest Passenger Railway” (72.7% grade!) to Point Park, part of the Chickamauga & Chattanooga National Military Park. Walk the trails for views of Moccasin Bend and the Tennessee River.
    2. Ruby Falls. Descend 1,120 feet into a limestone cavern to see the tallest underground waterfall in the U.S. Open for guided tours year-round.
    3. Rock City Gardens. Stroll through ancient rock formations, lush gardens, and the iconic “See Seven States” overlook. Don’t miss the fairy-tale Enchanted Trail and swinging bridge.
    4. Covenant College Overlook. Pull over near the college campus for sweeping views of McLemore Cove and the valley below.
    5. Cloudland Canyon State Park. Hike the Waterfalls Trail to see Cherokee and Hemlock Falls, or peer into the 1,000-foot-deep canyon from the West Rim overlooks.
    6. Trenton, Georgia. Visit the whimsical Alpine-style “Little Chicago” buildings and learn about the area’s 1930s moonshining history.

Conclude your drive in Rising Fawn, a quiet mountain town near Cloudland Canyon. Extend your trip with a detour to DeSoto State Park (AL) or return to Chattanooga via I-59.

    Tips for the Drive

    • Road Conditions: Narrow and winding; RVs and trailers should avoid sections like the Incline Railway access road.
    • Season: Fall (Oct–Nov) for foliage; spring (Apr–May) for wildflowers. Winter can bring icy patches.
    • Fees: Entry fees apply for Ruby Falls, Rock City, and Cloudland Canyon (5–5–25).
    • Wildlife: Watch for deer, wild turkeys, and peregrine falcons.
