The Aristi–Papingo Road is a short but spectacular mountain road in the Epirus region of northwestern Greece, leading from the traditional stone village of Aristi up to Mikro & Megalo Papingo. This winding drive climbs through the Vikos–Aoös National Park, hugging cliffs and offering dramatic views of the Voidomatis River Valley and the towering Astraka massif of Mount Tymfi.

Begin in the stone-built village of Aristi, known for its traditional architecture and views of the Voidomatis River. From the main square, take the signposted road north toward Papingo.

Scenic Stops & Highlights Along the Way

1. Aristi Viewpoint. Look back for a postcard-perfect view of Aristi and the surrounding Pindus mountains.
2. Voidomatis River Bridge. Cross the iconic stone bridge over the crystal-clear Voidomatis River, one of Europe’s cleanest rivers. There’s a small parking area where you can walk down to the riverbank.
3. Series of Hairpin Bends. The climb begins here, with tight switchbacks that reveal sweeping views of the valley below and the peaks above.
4. Astraka Viewpoint / Beloi Turn-off. Stop for stunning views of Astraka Tower (2,436 m), one of the most famous peaks of Mount Tymfi.
5. Megalo Papingo. The main village, with traditional tavernas and boutique hotels.
6. Mikro Papingo. Small village with cobbled lanes, stone houses, and small guesthouses and access to hiking trails including the route to Astraka Refuge and Drakolimni (Dragon Lake). 

Travel Tips

• The road is narrow; use caution on blind corners and watch for goats or sheep.
• Drive in low gear during the climb and descent.
• Combine this drive with a visit to Vikos Gorge Viewpoints (Oxya or Beloi) for a full-day experience.
• Parking in Megalo Papingo is limited; arrive early during peak season.
• Best Time to Visit: Spring to autumn (winter may bring snow and icy sections)
