Alp Grüm - One of the most stunning viewpoints on the entire route, overlooking the brilliant blue Palü Glacier and Lake Poschiavo far below. From the Bernina Pass parking area, either catch a 10-minute train from Ospizio Bernina station, or walk the scenic 5.5-km trail (90 minutes, mostly downhill). The Ristorante Alp Grüm serves Italian pasta with views over the Val Poschiavo valley.

Cavaglia Glacier Garden - Descending toward Poschiavo, this geological wonder features giant potholes (called "giants' cauldrons") carved by glacial meltwater over thousands of years—some reaching 15 meters in diameter.

Poschiavo - A beautifully preserved Italian-speaking Swiss town with 19th-century architecture, charming piazzas, and the crystal-clear Poschiavino stream. The tranquil Lake Poschiavo is ideal for swimming, fishing, or simply relaxing. Spend time wandering the historic streets and sampling local cuisine—you're now in Italian Switzerland.

Brusio Circular Viaduct - Just before Tirano, watch for the famous 360-degree spiral viaduct where the Bernina Express railway loops around itself to manage the steep descent. An engineering marvel and photography favorite.

Tirano - Your journey ends in this picturesque Italian mountain town. Stroll the cobblestone streets to the 16th-century Santuario della Madonna di Tirano, built after the Virgin Mary allegedly appeared in a vision. The surrounding Valtellina Valley is renowned for its wines—sample local Sforzato or Valtellina Superiore before heading home.

Driving Tips

Year-Round Access - Unlike most Swiss passes, the Bernina remains open all year. However, winter driving requires proper equipment—snow chains or winter tires are mandatory from October to May.

Not for Caravans - Some sections feature tight turns and steep inclines. Large vehicles and caravans are not recommended.

Passport Required - You'll cross the Swiss-Italian border. Carry valid identification for all passengers.

Start Early - The pass is popular with tourists. Arrive early at Lago Bianco and major viewpoints for parking and peaceful photography.
